It is advisable that you familiarize yourself with the stitches used in this pattern. I have used the modifications of single crochet. Yes, you read that right.

Herringbone Single Crochet stitch for the edges and the remaining part is made using crossed single crochet.

Materials needed for this 30-minute easy crochet hat

Yarn – for a quick project, we want to opt for a bulky yarn. This makes the hat crocheting pretty fast. The prototype was made and tested using a #7 bulky yarn. Check out the Frequently asked questions below for tips on substituting this yarn.

7  sts over 6 Rows = 4” across, made using xsc, before blocking.

Adjust hook size, if necessary, to obtain gauge.

Special Stitch

Crossed single crochet (xsc)

First row of xsc = *Skip next st, sc in next st, crocheting over the sc just made into the skipped st, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through the loops

Rep from * to the end of the row.

Subsequent rows of xsc =

 *Skip the first leg of xsc, sc in the second leg of xsc, crocheting over the sc just made into the first leg of xsc, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through the 2 loops=

Herringbone single crochet (Hsc): Insert hook through vertical bar of the previous single crochet st (last bar closest to working yarn), insert into the next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook. 

TIP: Make sure the yarnover loop is pulled up to the height of a full sc).

Section 1 – Brim for the 30-minute easy crochet hat-free pattern

Chain 13 (15, 17, 19, 21)

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch, Hsc in each ch across, turn. 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) sts

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, xsc in each st across, sc in last st, turn. 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) xsc

Rows 3 – 19 (23, 25, 29, 31): Repeat Row 2

Reduce or increase the repeats until you have a good wrap around your model’s head.

Crown

Row 20 (24, 26, 30, 32): Ch 1, sc in first st, hsc in each st/edge across, sc in last st.

Turn your work 90 degrees

Crocheting across the long edge 

Row 21 (25, 27, 31, 33): Ch 1, sc in first st, xsc in each st/edge across, sc in last st, turn. 20 (24, 26, 30, 32) xsc
