Ear warmers are simply one of my favorite crochet accessories!!! This is so, as it is super easy on days I am rushing out of the house. I slip on my cute ear warmer and that is all. This inspired the design of this ear warmer pattern. I wear them in different colors and styles. Little wonder I make different styles of crochet Ear warmers.

I love that my ears can be kept warm as it gets cold often. This new addition is having a beautiful twist to it. I’ve added an opening for my hair, and it can be worn as a head warmer and as a low ponytail head warmer. It’s a win-win, if you don’t have long hair, you can still make this pattern.

Materials needed for the Arewa ponytail ear warmer pattern

Yarn – Any DK (#3) weight yarn can be used for this project.

However, this prototype was made using Schpeepjes Sparkle, DK, #3 lightweight (100% Acrylic 322 yards/295 m per 3.5 oz/100g skein)

Estimated Yardage

80 (100, 120) yards

  • Hook and other materials
  • Size F/ (4 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Elastic Hair tie (3”)

Gauge

13 sts over 15 rows = 10 cm/4” made in sc

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

Pattern Notes

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Similar #3 weight yarn can be substituted, please check the gauge.
  3. The pattern is worked in BLO from Round 4 and throughout the pattern.
  4. For a wider ear warmer, simply increase the number of sts in round 2.

Construction Notes

The Arewa Ear warmer is worked in rounds, simply place a stitch marker at the end of Round 1, and move with each round.

Adjustments/fittings:

Length: increase or decrease the repeats for a better fit, size as you crochet

Crocheting around an elastic band should not be an issue or challenge to hinder you from making this easy ear warmer pattern. I made a detailed post to help you with pro tips on how to crochet around an elastic band.

Instruction for the ponytail crochet ear warmer pattern

Round 1: Join yarn to the hairband with asl st, ch 1, 48 sc evenly around the band, join with a sl st to beginning ch. (48 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in next 16 sts, leave the remaining sts unworked, turn. (16) sc

Rounds 3: Ch 1, FLO, sc in each stitch across, turn working in opposite sts (BLO), sc in each st across, join with a sl st to beginning ch. (32) sc

Round 4: Working in BLO, sc in each st around, place stitch marker, and move with every round from here. (32 sc)

Rounds 5 – 18 (22, 28): Repeat Round 4

Start Decreasing

Round 19 (23, 29): Continue Working in BLO, Sc2tog 6 times, sc in remaining 20 sts. (26 sc)

Rounds 20 (24, 30) – 21 (25, 31): Sc in each st around. (26 sc)

Round 22 (26, 32): Sc2tog 5 times, sc in remaining 16 sts. (21 sc)

Rounds 23 (27, 33) – 24 (28, 34): Sc in each st around. (21 sc)

Round 25 (29, 35): Sc2tog 4 times, sc in remaining 13 sts.

Rounds 26 (30, 36) – 27 (31, 37): Sc in each st around. (14 sc)

End of Decrease

Round 28 (32, 38): 2 sc 4 times, sc in remaining sts. (21 sc)

Round 50 (58, 74): Sc through both sides, turn. (16 sc)

To join the hairband –

On the Hairband, count 8 sts away from the last st of the headband, sl st to the 8th st on the hairband.

With both sts on the hairband and headband head together, sl st through the next 16 sts.

Fasten off.

Sew in ends.
