How to Crochet a Bobble Stitch

Crochet bobble stitch is such a fun stitch that adds beautiful texture to any project! There is absolutely nothing not to love about the bobble stitch.

Do you know the other closely related crochet stitches to the bobble stitch? The crochet Puff stitch and the popcorn stitches are so similar to the bobble stitch. This post would show you how I make my crochet bobble stitch and show a few patterns I made using Bobbles.

Why make the crochet bobble stitch?

If you want a pattern full of texture and one that provides warmth, then the bobble stitch is perfect for you!

You can use any yarn weights, basically – you would get different thicknesses and bulkiness with the yarn type selected. So far, I have made the bobble stitch using the following yarn weights;

Double knit (#3)

Worsted weight yarn (#4) yarn

Chunky (#5) yarn.

The finished look is different with each of the yarns. You can also experiment with your choice of crochet hooks. In all, use the crochet hook and yarn you are most comfortable with.

Methods for making the bobble stitch

There are two basic methods of making/crocheting the bobble stitch. The major difference is how big the finished bobble looks. You can decide to make the smaller one or go with the bogger version of the bobble stitch. The good news is that both methods use similar stitches.

Instruction for the bobble stitch

Supplies

Yarn –

Double Knit yarn in 2 contrasting colors

Hook – 5 mm hook

Bobble stitch – (also referred to as the Puff stitch)

This can either be made as 5dctog (5 double crochet together) or 7dctog (7 double crochet together). Most stitch patterns that use the bobble stitch are not reduced. That means you do not crochet 5 or 7 stitches together.

First variant – 5dctog =

Step 1 – *Yarn over (yo), insert hook in indicated st.

Step 2 – Yarn over, draw yarn through the stitch

Step 43 – Yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on the hook

Step 4 – Repeat from * 4 more times in the same stitch, (you should have 6 loops on your hook now)

Step 5 – Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 6 loops on your hook.

Step 6 (optional) – Secure with a chain 1

First bobble (5dctog) made.

Second variant – 7dctog =

Step 1 – *Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st

Step 2 – Yarn over, draw yarn through, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops

Step 3 – Repeat from * 6 more times, “you should have 8 loops around your hook”

Step 4 – Yarn over, pull through all the loops at once.

Occasionally, when you need to add/change colors, you might want to have bobbles with statements like the ones below, this involves making the bobbles in another color. A beautiful crochet design emerges when you are able to successively change from one color to another. Use the tutorial below for easy color change when making your bobbles.

Here are a few things to note while making a pattern using Bobble stitch

1. Bobbles are to be crocheted on the wrong side to make them puff and beautiful
2. if using two colors, carry “un-used” yarn i.e C, crocheting over it.
3. A gentle pull at regular intervals would prevent the un-sued yarn from showing 

Row 1: (RS) With A, ch 21, dc in 3rd ch from hook, Hdc in each chain across, turn (20 dc)

Row 2: (WS) Ch 2, *dc in next 4 sts, 1 bobble, repeat from * to end of the Row, turn (4 Bobbles, 16 dc)

Row 3: (RS) Ch 1, sc in each st across (20 sc)

Repeat Row 2 and 3 till you have your desired length
