Main Color – (MC) Red = 70 yards

Contrasting Color (CC) Black = 30 yards

Contrasting Color 2 (CC2)  Yellow = 10 yards

US size G  (4 mm) Crochet Hook

Gauge – 14 sts over 8  rows = 10 cm/4” square made in dc

Section 1 – Placemat

With MC, chain 53

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each ch across, turn.  52 dc

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdcl across to last st, dc in last st, turn. 2 dc, 17 xdcl

Rows 3 – 10: Rep Row 2

Fasten off MC, join CC

Rows 11 – 12: Rep Row 2

Fasten off CC, join MC

Rows 13 – 21: Rep Row 2

Row 22: Ch 2, *hdc in first leg of xdcl, hdc in next ch sp, hdc in next leg of xdcl, rep from * to last st, hdc in last st, turn.

Do not fasten off

Edging

Crocheting down the short side, one side at a time.

With the right side facing you.

You can use only MC or join CC midway through.

Row 1:  Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st/ch sp across. Fasten off.

Join yarn on the opposite side, repeat Row 1

Fasten off. 

Placemat Belt

With CC 2, chain 44. Join with a sl st to the beginning chain.

Round 1: Ch 2, *dc in the next 13 chains, 3 dc in next chain, dc in next 7 sts, 3 dc in next st, rep from * to end, join with a sl st to the beginning chain. 52 dc

Leave a long tail of thread for sewing.

To assemble your Crochet Christmas placemat

Place the belt over the right side of the placemat, making sure to have the parts made in CC1 in the middle.

With CC2, using mattress stitch, sew the belt to the placemat.
