To keep the Hat firm/in shape.
1. Stiffen it with;
• Fabric stiffener

• Starch
Suggested starch options
• Commercially prepared “fabric stiffeners”
• Hair spray, watered-down glue
• Laundry starch
• Kitchen cornstarch
2. Add Wire or Fishing line to the last round; continue below;
Wrap duct tape around the first and last 1” (to prevent this part from injuring you).
Note:
- If adding wire or fishing line, work over the wire or fishing line while working the next round.
- If skipping wire/fishing line, just work a round of sc.
Round 9 (9, 9, 11, 11): Ch 1, sc in each st across the brim, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 120 (144, 168, 192, 216) sc

For both Types (with Wire/Fishing Line and without)

How to Apply Starch to Your Hat;
- Prepare the Starch accordingly and apply to your hat.
- Shape your hat appropriately.
- Allow to dry.
- If using a cotton blend, you can set the oven to 180° with a bowl in the body of the hat to keep it in shape and bake for 25 minutes, allow the hat to dry and set it before removing it from the oven.
I hope to see your beautiful version of this easy crochet sun hat!
Would you have to use a fabric stiffener if raffia yarn was used?
Hi Pamela,
For this sun hat, I used Aran weight yarn and not raffia. Irrespective of the yarn used, you can skip the stiffener.
I hope this help.
