If adding wire/fishing line

  1. Measure the brim.
  2. Measure and cut out the required wire/fishing line, add about 3”.

To keep the Hat firm/in shape.

1. Stiffen it with;

• Fabric stiffener

• Hair spray

• Starch

Suggested starch options

• Commercially prepared “fabric stiffeners”

• Hair spray, watered-down glue

• Laundry starch

• Kitchen cornstarch

2. Add Wire or Fishing line to the last round; continue below;

Wrap duct tape around the first and last 1” (to prevent this part from injuring you).

Note:

  1. If adding wire or fishing line, work over the wire or fishing line while working the next round.
  2. If skipping wire/fishing line, just work a round of sc.

Round 9 (9, 9, 11, 11): Ch 1, sc in each st across the brim, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 120 (144, 168, 192, 216) sc

Fasten off.

Finishing

For both Types (with Wire/Fishing Line and without)

Round 10 (10, 10, 12, 12): Ch 1, crab stitch around, join with a sl st to the beginning chain.

Fasten off.

How to Apply Starch to Your Hat;

  • Prepare the Starch accordingly and apply to your hat.
  • Shape your hat appropriately.
  • Allow to dry.
  • If using a cotton blend, you can set the oven to 180° with a bowl in the body of the hat to keep it in shape and bake for 25 minutes, allow the hat to dry and set it before removing it from the oven.

I hope to see your beautiful version of this easy crochet sun hat!

    1. Hi Pamela,
      For this sun hat, I used Aran weight yarn and not raffia. Irrespective of the yarn used, you can skip the stiffener.
      I hope this help.

    1. It’s a fun edging like working single crochet inn the reverse direction.
      Insert your hook into your last stitch of your last row, yarn over, Pull through (2 loops left on hook), rotate your hook 180 degree, Yarn over, and pull through last two loops on hook. You have now completed the first crab stitch. Now you just want to repeat that sequence into every stitch to create your border.
