Toddler Size
Round 1: In a magic Ring, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), 12 hdc in magic ring, join. 12 hdc.
Round 2: Ch 2, in BLO 2 hdc in each around, join. 24 hdc.

For a wider Brim, repeat Rows 12 – 14 till desired length.

Note that your stitch count won’t be the same.
Do not Fasten Off.

Adding wire to your crochet ponytail sun hat

If adding wire/fishing line, measure the brim.
Measure and cut out the required wire/fishing line, add about 3”.
If using wire or fishing line, continue to Row 15.
If leaving your Sun Hat as it is or would stiffen your hat, continue to Row 16.

Other ways to stiffen your crochet ponytail sun hat

To keep the Hat firm/in shape.

  1. Stiffen it with;
    • Fabric stiffener
    • Hair spray
    • Starch
    Suggested starch options
    • Commercially prepared “fabric
    stiffeners”
    • Hair spray, watered down glue
    • Laundry starch
    • Kitchen cornstarch
  2. Add Wire or Fishing line to the last round, continue below;
    Wrap duct tape around the first and last 1” (to prevent this part from injuring you)
    Row 15: Ch 1, if adding wire or fishing line, working over the over wire or fishing line, sc in each st across the brim. 162 (189, 216, 243) sc

Finishing – Those For both Types (with Wire/Fishing Line and without)
Row 16: Ch 1, turn, working through the edges of the ponytail opening, sc in each st across, turn
Fasten off.

How to Apply Starch to your crochet ponytail sun hat

• Prepare the Starch accordingly and apply to your hat.
• Shape your hat appropriately.
• Allow to dry.
• If using cotton blend, you can put the oven to 180° with a bowl in the body of the hat to keep it in shape and bake for 25 minutes, leave to cold and set before removing from
the oven.

Snap Button
• On either side, Sew snap button on the first row of the beginning of the Brim.
• Adjust the position of your snap button for a better fit.
• Optional – snap button can also be added on the lower end of the brim.

Section 2 – Detachable tie

Long Band
Note – Your starting chains should be the length of your head circumference plus 6 (8, 10, 10)”

Row 1: Chain 102 (122, 142, 162), hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each chain across, turn. 100 (120, 140, 160) hdc

Bow
With CC, Chain 24 (24, 28, 36) join with a slip st to first ch.

Fasten off.

Bow clip
Row 1: With CC, chain 7, hdc in third chain from hook, hdc in each chain across, turn. 5 hdc

Sew through the bow to the band.
snap button.

Measure 3 (4, 5, 5)” from the other end of Long Band, sew the opposite part of snap button.

This Prototype is Adult Small with wire used in Round 16 of the Brim. After which Hair spray was generously sprayed on the whole hat
