Size(s) and color codes – XS (S, M, L) = Toddlers (Child, Teen, and Adult) sizes

Materials needed for the crochet plaid cowl
Yarn requirement: You can use any DK-weight yarn or any yarn used to meet the gauge
The prototype used = Stylecraft Bellissima DK, #3 (100% Acrylic, 293 yards / 286 meters per 3.5 oz/100g skein).
Estimated Total Yardage
Color A (Black): 160 (200, 240, 280) yards
Color B (Plum): 100 (120, 140, 160) yards
Color C (Rio): 100 (120, 140, 160) yards

Hook and other Materials
5 mm Crochet Hook
Buttons = 4 – 6 pcs (14 mm in diameter used)
Gauge: 14 sts over 6 rows = 4’’by 4” made in dc before blocking.
If necessary, go up or down a hook size to obtain a gauge.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next ch, *ch 3, skip 3 chs, dc in next 3 chs, rep from * across, turn

Drop A, join B
Row 2: Ch 3, skip next 3 sts, *3 dc over the skipped foundation ch below, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, rep from * until the end, sl st to last st, turn.
51 (57, 63, 72) dc
18 (20, 22, 25) ch sps
Drop B, join C
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc, here and throughout), dc in next 2 sts (from 2 rows below, over the ch sp from a row below), *ch 3, skip next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts (from 2 rows below, over the ch sp from a row below), rep from * until the end, turn

Rows 25 (29, 33, 37) – 31 (35, 41, 45): Repeat Rows 4 – 5
Continue the repeat using color A until your piece measures 12”
Row 37: With A, Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts
*dc in next 3 sts (from 2 rows below, over the ch sp from a row below), hdc in next 3 sts, rep from * until the end, turn.
Row 38: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, repeat from * to the end.
Repeat Row 38 once more time for a perfect fit around the waist.
Edging
- Crocheting around the whole piece
- Crocheting loosely
- Continue with Black (color A)
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, aim for [1sc, ch 2, 1 sc] at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning chain.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, aim for [1sc, ch 2, 1 sc] at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning chain.
Do not fasten off.
Section 3 – Buttonhole
Crochet down the short end in rows.
Rows 1 – 2: Ch 1, hdc in st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in first st,*ch 2, skip next 2 sts, hdc in next 8 sts*, rep from * to the end, turn.
Adjust the number of chains and skipped sts to fit your desired buttons.
Row 4: Ch sc in each st across
Fasten off.
Other side
Crochet down the opening of the skirt from the band downwards.
Join yarn with a sl st to the opposite side.
Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Sew buttons to the corresponding side.
Sew it ends.
Fasten off.
