About the Pattern
The Azure Mandala Asymmetrical Skirt is an advanced beginner crochet pattern written in US crochet terminology. It combines familiar stitches with shells and clusters to create an open, decorative fabric.
The skirt is made in three sections, giving you a clear sequence to follow as your project grows. You will begin with the mandala, make and join the square motifs, and finish with the band.
With five sizes from XS to XL, you can choose your size using the measurements below.

Yarn for Your Crochet Skirt
My sample was made using Hobbii Cotton Kings Sultan Deluxe. Its gradual colour changes add another layer of interest to the mandala and square motifs.
You can use any #2 weight yarn in colours of your choice, provided you can achieve the pattern gauge. When choosing a substitute, consider how the fabric hangs as well as how it looks. A skirt benefits from a fabric that moves comfortably without feeling stiff.

Materials needed for the Azure Mandala Asymmetrical Skirt
• Any #2 weight yarn in your chosen colours
• 4 mm crochet hook, or the size needed to achieve gauge
• Darning needle
• Elastic thread, optional
Sizes, Measurements and Yardage
Measurements are in inches. Instructions are written in the order XS (S, M, L, XL).
| Size | Hip measurement | Skirt length | Estimated yardage |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 32″ | 40″ | 720 yards |
| S | 36″ | 42″ | 780 yards |
| M | 40″ | 44″ | 840 yards |
| L | 44″ | 44″ | 920 yards |
| XL | 48″ | 44″ | 980 yards |
Gauge
Rounds 1 to 3 = 4 inches.
Follow the pattern instructions and measure after completing Round 3. Adjust your hook size if necessary to achieve gauge before continuing.
Checking gauge at this stage helps you avoid making a large section before discovering that your measurements are different from the pattern.

How the Skirt Is Constructed
Section 1: The Mandala
Begin by crocheting the mandala in rounds. This forms the circular motif at the heart of the design.
Section 2: The Squares
Make the square motifs in rounds, then join them together to form a rectangle. Join this rectangle to the mandala from Section 1 to build the skirt’s distinctive shape.
Section 3: The Band
Complete the skirt by working the band in the round.
Pattern Notes
• Read through the full pattern before starting.
• Chains at the beginning of rounds count as stitches.
• Stitch counts are provided after each round.
• The mandala, squares and band are worked in rounds, with joining between the sections.
• Follow the instructions for your selected size throughout.
Tips for Making Your Azure Mandala Skirt
Check your stitch counts regularly
Counting at the end of each round makes it easier to catch a missed stitch before it affects the next round.
Plan your colour placement
If you are using a gradient yarn, consider where you would like each colour to appear in the mandala and squares before you begin.
Check the layout before joining
Arrange your completed motifs according to the pattern before joining them. This is a useful opportunity to check their orientation and your colour arrangement.
Block with care
Follow your yarn’s care instructions when blocking. Support the fabric as it dries and avoid stretching it beyond the intended measurements.
