Yarn: Any Worsted weight yarn.

Scheepjes Cahlista – Worsted Weight, #4 Aran (100% Cotton, 92 yards per 50g skein)

  • 5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Headband
  • Darning Needle

Gauge

16 sts over 10 rows = 4 x 4” made in hdc, before blocking.

Adjust the hook size as necessary to achieve the desired gauge.

How to make a crochet bow headband

Section 1: Headband

  • Adjust the number of chains to match the length of the headband.
  • For thinner headbands, you should stop once you have a width wide enough to cover the headband.

Types of headbands

Type 1: Same shape headband

The headband has a uniform width throughout its shape.

Type 1: Wide center headband

The headband has tapered ends with a wide center.

Headband with a wide center 

Row 1: Chain 66, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn.  65 sc

Adjust the number of chains to fit the length of your headband

Rows 2 – 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. 65 sc

Rows 4 – 6: Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, dc in next 33 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in remaining 8 sts, turn. 65 sts

Rows 7 – 8: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. 65 sc

Increase or decrease the repeats until you have a width wide enough to wrap around the headband.

Do not fasten off.

Headband with a similar shape

Row 1: Chain 66, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn.  65 sc

Attaching the Band to the Headband

  1. Pick up the headband.
  2. Position the crocheted band across the headband.
  1. Using a darning needle or crochet hook, sew or join the two long sides together until fully secured.
  2. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
  3. At one end, join yarn with a slip stitch and work slip stitches to secure.
  1. Repeat the slip stitch join on the opposite end.
  1. Fasten off and set aside.

Section 2: Bow

Row 1: Chain 21, sc in the 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn. 20 sc

Rows 2 – 35: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. 20 sc

Edging

Crochet around the whole piece, aiming for 1 sc in each stitch and (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) at each corner.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc around the whole piece, join with a sl st.

Round 2: Ch 1, sl st in each st around, join with a sl st.

Fasten off.

Bridging bow

Row 1: Chain 8, sc in the 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn. 7 sc

Rows 2 – 15: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. 7 sc

Edging

Crochet around the whole piece, aiming for 1 sc in each stitch and (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) at each corner.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc around the whole piece, join with a sl st.

Assembling the Bow

  • Fold the crocheted band in half to form the bow shape. 
  • Pinch the center together to create the classic bow look.
  • Wrap a small strip of yarn (or the designated center piece) tightly around the middle to hold the shape.
  • Secure the wrap with a few stitches using a darning needle.
  • Fasten off and weave in all ends neatly.
  • Attach the finished bow to the headband, sewing it firmly in at the parts touching the headband.

Weave in all ends.
