How to Crochet A Spider
As part of the Halloween crochet project ideas on the blog, I thought adding a dedicated tutorial on how to crochet a spider is essential. I have added the basic knowledge to develop patterns like the spider bookmark and spider wreath.

Materials for a crochet spider
Yarn: Any yarn weight can be used for this project. For a baby spider, go with a tiny thread.
I used Stylecraft Special Aran (#4, 100% Acrylic, 196 m per 3.5 oz/100g Ball) for the prototype
Hook and other materials
4 mm crochet hook
Darning Needle
Googly Eyes – 2 per spider
Glue: Use it to secure the eyes to the spider. For safety reasons, skip the eyes if the intended user is under 3 years old.
Guage
Guage is not crucial for this project.
Estimated Yardage
20 Yards
Crochet Spider Pattern Notes
- Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
- The pattern can be made using any yarn weight.
- Chains at the beginning of the rows do not count as a stitch.

Chain/chains – ch/chs
Single Crochet – sc
Half Double crochet – hdc
Finished Measurement
Total length = 3” by 3”
Spider without legs = 2” by 2”

How to crochet a spider
Spider Body
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in magic ring, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 6 sc
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 12 sc
Round 3: Ch 1, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st,* repeat from * to * to end, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 18 sc
Do not fasten off.
Section 2: Spider Legs
First and second legs: Ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, 2 sc in next ch, sl st in last 2 chs, sl st to next st the body of the spider
Third and fourth legs: Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc2tog in next ch, sl st in last 2 chs, sl st to next st the body of the spider
Sl st in next 3 sts on the body of the spider.
Fifth and sixth legs: Ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, 2 sc in next ch, sl st in last 2 chs, sl st to next st the body of the spider
Seventh and Eight legs: Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc2tog in next ch, sl st in last 2 chs, sl st to next st the body of the spider
Continue with sl st in the remaining sts on the spider’s body.
Optional
- Make a long rope to secure the spiders to the pumpkins.
- After the 7th and 8th spider legs, continue below:
Continue with sl st in the next 3 sts on the spider’s body.
Leave the remaining sts unworked and continue with the rope.
Fasten off.
Glue the googly eyes to the body of the spider.
