Twist to the Classic Crochet Beanie Pattern

If you love crochet beanies, then the Twist to the Classic Beanie is just for you. It uses simple stitches with increase and decrease intervals to give a nice wavy effect.

To add to that, the pattern is mostly worked in the back loop only, which adds a lovely ridged texture to it. This crochet beanie pattern is simple but unique and works up fast.

How to crochet an easy crochet beanie

Materials needed for this easy crochet beanie project

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • #4 Worsted weight yarn
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle
  • Pompom (optional)

Stitches & Terms Used:

  • Ch(s) – chain(s)
  • Blo – back loop only
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Rpt – Repeat
  • Fo – fasten off

Notes: Read through the pattern from beginning to end before starting your work just to be sure you don’t have any questions that might cause frustration while working on the project.

  • Please check your gauge and adjust as needed to achieve correct sizing.
  • All dc’s after the ch 3 are worked into the dc of the previous round.
  • Ch 3 counts as a st.
  • The Twist to the Classic Beanie is worked flat in rows and seamed together when finished. One end is closed to form the top of the beanie and the other end is folded up to form the brim.
  • The beanie has a lot of stretches so the actual finished circumference and fit (listed above) differ by a few inches depending on your tension.
  • 250 yards will be enough to complete any size for this crochet beanie.

Chain 51.

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, (dc in each of the next 3 ch, dc2tog twice, dc in each of the next 3 ch, 2 dc in each of the next 2 ch) 3 times. Dc in each of the next 3 ch, hdc2tog twice, sc in the next 3 chs, 2 sc in last ch. (48 sts)

From here throughout, work in blo.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. 2 sc in the 1st st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, hdc2tog twice, (dc in the next 3 sts, 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, dc in each of the next 3 sts, dc2tog twice) 3 times,  dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc on top of ch 3. (48 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, turn. Dc in 1st st, (dc in each of the next 3 sts, dc2tog twice, dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in each of the next 2 sts) 3 times. Dc in each of the next 3 sts, hdc2tog twice, sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st. (48 sts)

Rows 4 – 32: Rpt Row 2 – 3

Fold in half lengthwise with the right side facing each other. Sl st last row to the beginning row to join them. To best disguise the join, the seam is worked only through the chain stitches and the back loop of the adjacent st.

Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail. Use this tail to sew the top of the beanie closed.
