The construction of this lacy crochet cocoon cardigan is simple. You make a simple rectangle. It is also easy to adjust the cardigan for a better fit.

Note that the starting chain should be across your elbows, if you want to adjust the lenght, do so at the begining of the pattern.

Supplies needed for this crochet cocoon cardigan pattern

Yarn: Any DK Weight yarn

Hobbii Kind Feather, DK, #3 lightweight (100% Acrylic, 257 yards/235 m per 3.75 oz/100g Skein)

The prototype was made using two strands of Hobbii Twister. (A sport weight to get DK weight)

23 sts over 7 rows = 4” across unblocked.

Chain 25, follow the written instructions for 7 rows.

Adjust hook size, if necessary, to obtain gauge.

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any other weight of #3 weight yarn can be substituted.
  3. Chains at the beginning of the rounds do not count as a stitch.
  4.  Stitch count is written after each row/round, with the smallest (XS, S, M) written first and the other in the ().

Special Stitch

First row = *skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, ch 1, tr in 2nd skipped st, ch 1, rep from *to until the last sts, ch 1, skip next st, tr in last,

Subsequent rows of Xtrl = tr in the second leg of tr from a row below, ch 1, crocheting in front of the tr just made, tr in the first leg of tr from a row below.

This part is crocheted/stacked on previous tr stitches from the row below. All chain sps are skipped.

How to make this crochet cocoon cardigan

Chain 181 (197, 213)

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. 179 (195, 211) hdc

Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as the first tr and first ch 1, here and throughout), *skip next 3 sts, tr in next st, ch 1, tr in 2nd skipped st, ch 1, rep from *to until the last sts, ch 1, skip next st, tr in last, turn. 44 (48, 52) xtrl, 2 tr.

Row 3: Ch 5, *xtrl, ch 1, rep from *until last st, ch 1, skip ch sp, tr in last st (4th ch from the beginning ch 5), turn. 44 (48, 52) Xtr, 2 tr.

Rows 4 – 32 (34, 36): Rep row 3.

Row 33 (34, 35): Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch 1 sp across.

Do not fasten off.

Edging

Crocheting around the whole panel

Aim for 3 sc in each ch 5/tr

Round 1: Ch 1, *3 sc in each ch 5/tr across, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) at the corner, sc in each hdc st at the foundation sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) at next corner, rep from * around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off.

Block to measurement

Fold the 4 corners of the rectangle so that the tip of the two corners meet.

Sleeve Opening

  1. Measure 9 (10, 11)” away from the tip of the fold. This will be the sleeve opening.
  2. Sew/join the remaining part
  3. Repeat on the other side.

Sleeves Edging

Join yarn with a sl st to the tip where you started the joining

Round 1: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Round 2: Ch 2, in 3rd loop, sc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off.

Repeat on the other side.

Collar

Crocheting around the open part of the shrug

Round 1: Ch 2, Hdc evenly around the perimeter of the collar area, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Round 2: Ch 2, in 3rd loop, sc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off, and sew in the ends.
