I have provided 3 different gauges for you to work with. The first is for Double Knit yarn, the second is for Worsted weight (Aran), and the third is for Chunky weight yarn.

Gauge for DK = 16 sts over 12 rows = 10 cm/4” square made in hdc, using 5mm crochet hook. 

Gauge for Worsted weight = 14 sts over 11 rows = 10 cm/4” square made in hdc, using 6 mm crochet hook

Gauge for Chunky/Bulky Yarn weight = 12 sts over 10 rows  = 4” square made in hdc, using 8 mm

Construction Notes

  1. This cardigan is worked flat in rows, with the collar and sleeves made in rounds.
  2. The pattern is worked flat; you can customize the size by increasing or reducing your starting chains.

2. A similar yarn weight can be substituted; please check the gauge.

3. Chains at the beginning of the rows/rounds do not count as a stitch.

Instructions for this easy crochet cocoon cardigan free pattern

The written pattern below uses Worsted (Aran) Weight yarn! Use the buttons above for the PDF version, which contains all the other yarn weights and stepwise photos for the tutorials.

With A, chain 133, 153, 177

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each ch across, turn. 131, 151, 175 hdc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 131, 151, 175 hdc

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, *ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, rep from * to end, turn. 65, 75, 87 ch sps, 66, 76, 88 dc

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in first st, *hdc in ch 1 sp, hdc in next st, rep from * to end, turn. 131, 151, 175 hdc

Rep Rows 2 – 4 until Rectangle measures 28 (29, 30)”

End with Row 2

Edging 

Ch 2, hdc in each st around, aim for 2 hdc at each corner, 1 hdc in each hdc st and 2 hdc in each dc st,  join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off.

Sleeve Opening/Joining:

  1. Lay the piece flat. You should have a rectangle; fold the four corners so that the two sides meet each other.
  2. Measure 9 (10, 11)” away from the tip of the fold.
  3. Sew/join the remaining part.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

Sleeves 

Join Color B with a sl st to the tip where you started the joining

Round 1: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Rounds 2 – 6: Ch 2, in 3rd loop, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off.

Repeat on the other side.

Collar

Join Color B with a sl st to any part of the opening

Round 1: Ch 2, Hdc evenly around the perimeter of the collar area, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Rounds 2 – 6: Ch 2, in 3rd Loop, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off, sew in ends

  1. Hi. I have completed the rectangle but not sure where to go from here there are 2 parts for edging but no where to say how to fold?

    1. Hi, There should be one edging, I have deleted the second. To Join, lay your piece flat and sew the sides of the short ends together leaving the sleeve opening.
