How to crochet a simple crochet best pattern

The Portobello crochet vest is a beginner project that uses simple crochet stitches. You will make two separate rectangles and then proceed to join these together halfway through the middle to provide enough space for the neckline.

After which you sew the sides leaving enough space for your arms. And that is all. Use the instructions below to get the perfect size for you.

Supplies needed for this summer crochet vest project

Yarn – Portobello, Aran weight, #4,  60% Cotton, 28% Acrylic, 12% Wool, 120 m (131 yds) per 1.75 oz/50g skein)

Estimated Yardage in each color

Color A = Eucalyptus (98) – 500 (550, 600, 650, 700, 750, 800, 850, 900) yards

Color B = Hunter Green (116) – 400 (450, 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, 750, 800) yards

Estimated Total Yardage 

900 (1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700) yards

Hook – 6 mm Crochet Hook

Gauge

14 sts over 7 Rows = 4 x 4” made in xdc, before blocking.

Instructions for the gauge

Row 1: Chain 16, dc in 3rd ch and in each ch across, turn. 14 dc

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdc across until the last st, dc in last st, turn. 6 xdc, 2 dc

Rows 3 – 7: Rep Row 2

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

1.      This vest is worked in one section with 2 separate pieces made.

  • Make 2
  • Each panel should measure approximately 8.5” (9.5”, 10.5”, 11.5”, 12.5”, 13.5”, 12.5”, 13.5”, 14.5”)”

With A, Chain 148 (148, 148, 162, 162, 162, 178, 178, 178)

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd Ch from hook and in each Ch across, turn. 146 (146, 146, 160, 160, 160, 176, 176, 176) hdc

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdc across until the last st, dc in last st, turn. 72 (72, 72, 79, 79, 79, 87, 87, 87) xdc, 2 dc.

Rows 3 – 4 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12): Rep row 2

Fasten off A, join B

Rows 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) 11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19): Rep row 2

Fasten off B, join A

Edging

  • You can use color specific to each edge or go with the same color when working on the edges.
  • Crocheting around the whole panel.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around, aim for 2 sc in each dc/ch sp and (sc, ch 2, sc) at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, (sc, ch 2, sc) at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off

Your panel should measure approximately = 8.5” (9.5”, 10.5”, 11.5”, 12.5”, 13.5”, 12.5”, 13.5”, 14.5”)

To join

  • Place both panels beside each other.
  • Join color A with a sl st to the edge of any of the panels.
  • Using either a darning needing or a crochet hook with mattress st or sl st, join the first 60 (60, 60, 72, 72, 72, 78, 78, 78) sts, the parts marked read in the photo above.

Fasten off. 

Leave the remaining sts unjoined.

Side seam and armhole

  • Fold the panel into two, as shown in the photo below, and turn to the wrong side.
  • Measure 7.5 (8, 8, 8.5, 8.5, 9, 9, 9.5, 10)” from the shoulder tip downwards. 
  • Using either darning needing or a crochet hook with mattress st or sl st, join the sides together.
  • Fasten off

Finishing – Front opening 

  • Join A with a sl st to the lower end of the vest.
  • Crocheting upwards towards the neckline and back to the lower edge.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends

Block your vest to measurement.
