I have always wanted to make one of those super chunky crochet blankets, and finally got to design mine and share with you all this chunky crochet blanket-free pattern!

If you are looking for a super quick and rewarding project to keep you warm and cozy, then this is for you! This free chunky crochet blanket pattern is a perfect project for beginner crocheters as it uses basic stitches.

Chunky crochet blanket free pattern yarn ideas

To make this a super quick project, I went with the super chunky yarn the chunkiest yarn available in my stash, and a large crochet hook! I tell you what, it is super thick. Oh, And I matched it with a 15 mm crochet hook!

To make this a super quick chunky blanket, you need to use bulky yarn or jumbo-weight yarn! Any yarn labeled #6, #7, or #8 should do the magic. I used Hobbii Bungee Mini, Bulky, a #7 weight yarn. Bernat Blanket Yarn, Lionbrand super Bulky yarn #7 = Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick, Touch of Alpaca, I like Big yarn, chenille yarn are few examples that can be used.

Lionbrand Chunky Yarns #6 = I Wanna Make a Blankie Yarn, Home town.

You can combine two #5 weight yarns together. Make sure to check the gauge and adjust the hook size or yarn weight appropriately.

Yarn – Hobbii Bungee Mini, Bulky, #7 (42% Cotton, 48% Polyester, 68 yards/62 m per 200g)

HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • 15 mm Crochet Hook

Gauge

5 sts over 6  Rows = 4” across, made using hdc, before blocking.

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any #7 weight yarn can be substituted
  3. Chains at the beginning of Rounds or Rows do not count as a stitch.

Finished Blanket size – This blanket measures 45” by 70”. If you want to turn this crochet throw blanket into any other size like having a chunky crochet baby blanket, you should adjust the number of the chains made in the foundation row in a multiple of 2 and the number of repeats.

How to make a chunky crochet blanket pattern

  • To customize, increase, or decrease the numbers of your foundation chain in a multiple of 2.
  • Increase the number of repeats as you wish.
  • You can double chunky weight yarn for your version.

With A, Chain 48

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd Ch from hook and in each Ch across, turn. 46 hdc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in first st, xhdc across until the last st, hdc in last st, turn. 22 xhdc, 2 dc.

Rows 3 – 22: Rep row 2

Fasten off A, join B

Rows 23 – 33: Rep row 2

Fasten off B, join A

Rows 34 – 44: Rep row 2

Fasten off A, join B

Rows 45 – 54: Rep row 2

Row 55: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 46 hdc

Edging

  • You can use color specific to each edge or go with the same color when working on the edges.
  • Crocheting around the whole panel.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around, aim for 2 sc in each hdc/ch sp and (sc, ch 2, sc) at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, (sc, ch 2, sc) at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
