Yarn needed for this Chunky Beginner Cowl  

For a quick crochet cowl scarf pattern, a chunky-weight yarn is perfect. The prototype was made using Amigo Giga, which is a chunky weight yarn. It is a #6 (100% HB Acrylic, 95 m, 103 yds per 150 g /5.2 oz)

Crochet Hook

8 mm Crochet Hook or any other suitable hook size.


8 sts over 6 rows = 4” by 4” made using hdc

Gauge is not crucial to this project.

Quick crochet cowl pattern notes

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Chains at the beginning of the rows do not count as a stitch.
  3. Stitch count is written after each row.
  4. The pattern is worked in rows 


Chain – ch

Half double crochet – hdc

Stitch – st

Slip Stitch – sl st

Crossed half double crochet (xhdc)

First row of xhdc = *Skip next st, hdc in next st, crocheting over the hdc just made into the skipped st, yarn over hook, insert hook into skipped stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through the loops.

The Crochet Stitches for Quick & Easy Cowl Finished Measurements

7 X 38” ( 8.5 X 42”, 10 X 45”) 

1 hour quick crochet cowl scarf pattern

Chain 76 (86, 96)

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. 74 (84, 94) hdc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in first st, xhdc across until the last st, hdc in last st, turn. 36 (41, 46) xhdc, 2 hdc

Row 3 – 6 (8, 10): Rep Row 2

Row 7 (9, 11): Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 74 (84, 94) hdc

Do not fasten off


  • Crocheting around the whole Piece 

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, aim for 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning ch.


Turn – crocheting across the short edge.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 2, skip next st, sc in next 3 sts, rep from * to end. 

Fasten off

Sew the button to the lower band of the cowl, as shown above.

How to assemble

  • Fold the part with the buttonhole over the opposite end.
  • Button up and enjoy.
