A few months ago, I started making some crochet items for Christmas; these are aimed to be handed to my friends and family as part of their Christmas gifts while keeping some for our Christmas tree as decoration. I hope to add this Santa Applique for completeness.

Materials for this easy Santa Applique Free Crochet Pattern

  • YARN

Stylecraft Special Double Knit (100% acrylic 157 yards/144m per 3.5 oz/100g skein)

 1 Ball in Red = A

1 Ball in White = B

Optional

  • Black yarn to embroider the eyes.
  • Skin tone yarn for the first 2 rounds

ESTIMATED YARDAGE

50 yards

HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • US size G/6 (4 mm)
  • Safety eyes – 15 mm x 2 pcs
  • Yarn needle

GAUGE

Gauge is not crucial for this project.

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any #3 weight of yarns can be substituted
  3. Chains at the beginning of rounds /rows count as a stitch.
  4. The Santa applique can be straight or bent. There is complete instruction as to how to make each.

STITCHES ABBREVIATIONS

               Chain – ch

               Slip stitch – sl st

               Single Crochet – sc

               Half double crochet – Hdc

               Double crochet – dc

               Shell – 5 dc in the same st

               Repeat – rep

FINISHED MEASUREMENT

Finished Dimension – 5” by 2.5”

Instructions for this easy crochet Christmas Santa Applique pattern

Round 1: With A, make a magic ring, ch 2 (counts as hdc here and throughout the pattern), 6 hdc in magic ring, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 7 Hdc

Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st across, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 14 Hdc

Fasten off A, join B

Round 3: With B, ch 2, hdc in same st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 21 Hdc

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 28 Hdc

Lower Beard

Working in rows from here. With B

Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in same st, * skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, repeat from * 1 more time, sc in next st. 15 dc, 3 sc.

Leave the remaining stitches unworked.

Upper Beard 

Row 1: With B, ch 10, slip stitch into the base of ch 3 made in Row 5

Crocheting into the chain 10 made.

Row 2: Ch 1, skip first chain, 5 dc in next ch, skip 2 chs, sc in next ch, skip 2 chs, 5 dc in next ch, skip next ch, sc in last ch. 10 dc, 2 sc

Fasten off

Crown/hat

Working on the stitches left from Round 5 of the body.

Count 3 sts above the beard on each side, and place a stitch marker on each. Working between the stitch markers, join color B with a sl st.

Crocheting across the stitches between the stitch markers.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across, turn. 9 sc

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts, turn. 7 sc

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts, turn. 5 sc

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog in last 2 sts, turn. 3 sc

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn. 3 sc

Tip of the hat

For straight hat

Rows 6 – 9: Repeat Row 5.

Working on the side of the the crown, ch 1, sc in each st, do not fasten off, ch 10, join with a sl st to the opposite side of the crown (on Row 1), sc across the edge.

Fasten off A, join B

Rows 10 – 11: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (3 sc)

For curved hat

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in next, Hdc in next, dc in last, turn

Row 7: Ch 2, Hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last

Row 8: Repeat Row 6

Row 9: Repeat Row 7.

Working on the side of crown, ch 1, sc in each st, do not fasten off, ch 10, join with a sl st to the opposite side of the crown (on Row 1), sc across the edge.

Fasten off A, join B

Row 12: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. 4 sc

Row 13: Rep Row 12

Fasten off and Sew in the ends.

Eyes

Option 1 – using Black yarn, sew eyes just above the skin tone

Or

Glue in safety eyes.

Or leave without eyes.
