Hey, I am excited to share with you a new project, the crochet scrunchie-free pattern! This is a fun project with a lot of options to customize the scrunchies.

The crochet scrunchie is available as a free pattern, scroll down for the details. I have added some modifications to make these scrunchies unique and special. The PDF pattern includes the 3 versions.

There are three basic options provided! The Wiggles, Bows, and the cute scrunchie with a pocket.

Supplies needed for this crochet scrunchie pattern

Hobbii Kind Feathers, #3 lightweight (100% Acrylic, 257 yards/235 m per 3.75 oz/100g Skein)

ESTIMATED YARDAGE

70 yards

HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • US size G (4 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

16 sts over 10 rows = 4 x 4” made in xhdc, before blocking.

Instructions for the gauge

Row 1: Chain 18, hdc in 3rd ch and in each ch across, turn. 16 hdc

Rows 2 – 10: Ch 1, hdc in first st, xhdc in each st across until the last st, hdc, in the last st turn. 2 hdc, 7 xhdc

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

Crochet Scrunchies Free Pattern Notes

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any # 3 weight yarn can be substituted
  3. Chains at the beginning of Rounds or Rows do not count as a stitch.

STITCHES ABBREVIATIONS

Chain(s) – ch(s)

Single Crochet – sc

Half Double crochet – hdc

Back Loop Only – BLO

Crossed half double crochet – xhdc

Special Stitch

Crossed half double crochet – *skip next st, hdc in next st, crocheting over the hdc just made, work hdc into the skipped st, rep from * to the end.

How to make a crochet scrunchie with a bow

Step 1: Chain 12, insert the hair band in the middle of the chain.

Step 2: Sl st to the first ch to form a circle and make sure to have the elastic hair band in the chain.

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each ch around, join. 12 hdc

Round 2: Ch 1, xhdc around, join. 6 xhdc

Rounds 3 – 40: Repeat Round 2

Increase or decrease the number of repeats around the elastic band.

Leave a long tail of yarn enough to sew the ends together.

Using either a darning needle to crochet hook, sew the stitches left to the foundation row using either mattress stitch or sl st.

Fasten off

Weave in all ends.

Bow

Chain 32, join with a sl st to the first ch to form a circle.

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each ch around, join. 32 hdc

Round 2: Ch 1, xhdc around, join. 16xhdc

Rounds 3 – 5:Rep. Round 2

Round 6: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join. 32 hdc

Flat Part of the Bow

Row 1: Chain 4, 2 hdc in 4th chain – 3 hdc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 3 hdc

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in last st. 5 hdc

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 5 hdc

Row 5: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in last st – 7 hdc

Row 6: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 7 hdc

Row 7: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in last st – 9 hdc

Rows 8 – 19: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 9 hdc

Row 20: Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in next 5 sts, hdc2tog, turn. 7 hdc

Row 21: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 7 hdc

Row 22: Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog, turn. 5 hdc

Row 23: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 5 hdc

Row 24: Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, turn. 3 hdc

Row 25: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 3 hdc

Row 26: Ch 1, hdc3tog, turn.

Edging

Ch 1, sc around the whole piece

Smaller Bow

Row 1: Chain 11, 2 hdc in 3rd chain and in each ch across, turn – 9 hdc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 9 hdc

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 9 hdc

Leave a long tail of yarn for sewing

Fasten off

To assemble

Place the Bow over the flat part and place both over the small band.

Pinch the bow and sew the band tight to secure the bow set.

Finishing

  • Sew the bow to the scrunchie.
