Materials for the Star Top Christmas Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Yarn: Any Worsted Weight yarn in colors of your choice. 

Lion brand Vanna’s Choice, #4 Medium, Worsted weight (100% Acrylic, 170  yards/ 156m per 3.5 oz/100g skein)

Estimated Yardage

Red = 70 (90, 110, 130) Yards

White = 30 (40, 50, 60) Yards

Yellow = 20 (20, 20, 20) Yards

US size H (5 mm) Crochet Hook

Darning Needle

Gauge

15 sts over 15 Rows = 4 x 4” made in hdc, before blocking.

Special Stitches

Bean stitch: Insert hook into next st and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook), Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook), next, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop (6 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Chain 1 to secure the stitch. 

First bean made.

Skip the next stitch, then make another bean stitch. 

Continue skipping a stitch and then making another bean stitch as indicated in the pattern.

Crossed double crochet (xdc)

Skip next st, dc in next st, crocheting over the dc just made into the skipped st, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops.

Construction Note

This project is made in 3 sections

Section 1 – The beanie body is made in rows.

Section 2 – Joining the sides of the beanie, after which the brim is made in rows.

Section 3: The star is then made in rounds and joined to the beanie in place of a pom.

Section 1: Body of Beanie

Chain 21 (31, 31, 35)

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. 20 (30, 30, 34) sc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in first st, bean st across until last 2 sts, skip next st, hdc in last st, turn. 2 hdc, 9 (14, 14, 16) bean st/ch sps

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in first st, **bean st in ch-1 sp, ch 1, rep from * across, hdc in last st,

turn. 2 hdc, 9 (14, 14, 16) bean st/ch sps

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in first st, *hdc in next ch sp, hdc in next st, rep from * to last st, hdc in last st, turn. 20 hdc

Row 5: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdc across until last st, dc in last st, turn. 2 hdc, 9 (14, 14, 16) xhdc

Row 6: Repeat Row 5

Row 7: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. 20 hdc

Repeat Rows 2 – 7 = 2 (3, 4, 5) more times.

You can adjust the number of repeats by wrapping the panel around your head.

Edging

Crocheting around the whole panel

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) at each corner, join with a sl st to the beginning chain.

Do not fasten off.

Crown

Crocheting across one of the long edges 

Row 1: Ch 1, sc2tog across, turn

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog across. 

Using the crochet hook

Step 1: Pass the hook through each of the st on the long end and pick a loop on the hook. Repeat until you have picked all the stitches. 

Step 2: Wrap your yarn around your hook and pass this loop through all the loops on your hook.

Step 3: Secure tightly by making a chain.

Or use a darning needle and thread it through the remaining stitches, securing them tightly.

Crocheting down the side of the panel   

Do not fasten off.

Turn your beanie to the wrong side

Sew the two short sides together with sc or Mattress stitch.

Do not fasten off; continue to the lower end of the panel.

Brim 

Crocheting  around the long end

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

Turn to the right side

Join yarn a with a sl st to the edge that would

become the brim.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc evenly in each st across.

Fasten off.

Sew the sides together.

Fasten off.

  • Join color B with a sl st to any point on the beanie’s remaining long opening. 
  • Crocheting in rounds.

Row 1: Ch 5 (5, 7, 7), sc in second ch from hook, and in each ch, sl st in next 2 on Body of Hat, ch 1, turn—4 (4, 6, 6) sc. 

Row 2: Working in BLO, sc each across, ch 1, turn—4 (4, 6, 6) sc. 

Row 3: Working in BLO, sc in each across, sl st in next 2 on Body of Hat, ch 1, turn—6 4 (4, 6, 6) sc. 

Rows 4 – End: Repeat Rows 2-3 around Body of Hat. 

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. 

Sew ends together. 

Weave in ends.

Make 2 pcs

With Color C

Round 1: In a magic chain, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 8 dc in the magic ring, sl st to the top of ch 3, close the magic ring tightly. 9 dc

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), *sc in next st, (2 dc, tr, ch 3, sl st to the 3rd ch, tr, 2 dc) in next st, repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the beginning chain. 5 corners 

Fasten off the first piece. 

Joining

Using the yarn left, sew the two stars together.

Fasten off.

Secure the stars to the crown of the beanie.
