Crochet Phone Case Free Pattern

It’s time for a quick and functional project – A crochet phone case! I designed a water bottle holder with a phone pouch a few years ago and knew I wanted a similar concept to keep my phone.

Materials needed for the crochet phone case pattern

Yarn – Hobbii Kind Feathers, #3 lightweight (100% Acrylic, 257 yards/235 m per 3.75 oz/100g Skein)

ESTIMATED YARDAGE

Main color = 80 yards

Contrasting color = 20 yards

HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • US size G (4 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Button – 8 mm = 1 pcs
  • Stitch marker – 1 pcs

Gauge

16 sts over 8 rows = 4”/10 cm Square made in dc, before blocking. 

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any # 3 weight yarn can be substituted
  3. Chains at the beginning of Rounds or Rows do not count as a stitch.

Skip next st, dc in next st, crocheting over the dc just made into the skipped st, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops.

FINISHED MEASUREMENT

How to crochet phone case

Section 1 –Base

Base

Using MC throughout

Round 1: Chain 15, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 11 chs, 3 hdc in the last ch, turn your work to crochet along the other side of the chains, hdc in next 11 chs, 2 hdc in last ch, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 28 hdc

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 11 sts, 2 hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 11 sts, 2 hdc in last 2 sts, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 34 hdc 

Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 11 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, rep from * 2 more times, hdc in next 11 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, rep from * 1 more time, join with a sl st to beginning ch. 40 hdc 

Section 2 – Body

Keep checking the dimensions with that of your phone.

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning chain. 40 hdc 

Round 2: Ch 3, xdc around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 20 xdc

Rounds 3 – 15:  Repeat Round 2

Round 16: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning chain. 40 hdc 

Fasten off

Section 3 – Strap

  • Join yarn with a sl st to any point on the last round.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, turn – 6 sc

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn – 6 hdc

Rows 3 – 40: Repeat row 2

Or until you have a length long enough to carry the pouch in crossbody.

Fasten off

Edging

  • Crocheting across the long edges of the strap.
  • Join yarn with a sl st to the base where you started the handle.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each edge across, ch 1, sc in next 6 sts (short edge), ch 1, sc in each edge across, turn.

To make your crochet handle more sturdy

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in each st across; aim for ch 1 at each corner.

Fasten off

To join the strap to the opposite side of the cover.

  • Flip the handle to the other side so it falls opposite the base of the opposite strap.
  • Using either a darning needle or crochet hook, join the handle to the cover with mattress st or sl st.
  • Fasten off

Bag flap

Count 2 sts away from the strap

Join MC with a sl st to the third stitch 

Row 1:  ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 5 sts, turn. 6 sts

Row 2: Ch 3, xdc twice, dc in last st, turn. 2 dc, 2 xdc

Rows 3 – 7: Rep Row 2 

Row 8: ch 3, dc in next st, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, dc in last 2 sts, turn.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across; aim for 2 sc in ch sp.

Fasten off

Join yarn with a sl st to the base of the flap (where you joined yarn in row 1)

Crocheting around the edges of the flip

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st/edge across, fasten off.

Sew the button on the bag – make sure to match it to the buttonhole space.

Section 4: Small Pouch

Round 1: With CC, make a Magic ring, ch 3 (counts as the first dc, here and throughout), dc, *ch 1, 2 dc,  rep from * 6 more times, ch 1, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 16 dc, 8 ch sps

Close the ring tightly

Fasten off CC, join MC in any ch sp

Round 2: Ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc in ch 1 sp,*(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each ch 1 sp around, join. 32 dc, 8 ch sps

Fasten off MC, join CC to any of the ch sps.

Round 3: Ch 3, 5 dc in ch 1 sp, *6 dc each ch 1 sp, join. 48 dc

Fasten off CC, join MC to any of the 3rd  dc in the group of 6 dc from the round below

Round 4: Ch 7 (counts as the first tr + ch 3), tr, in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next st, rep from * 2 more times, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in last 2 sts, join with a sl st to the 3rd.Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around, aim for 3 sc in each ch 3 sp, join.

Joining

To join the small pouch to the phone bag

  • Place the pouch on the bag.
  • Mark the edges with stitch markers.
  • Use either a darning needle or crochet hook, with mattress stitch or slip st, and sew the 3 sides of the pouch to the bag, leaving the 4th (upper) part open.
