Materials needed for this easy crochet mug cozy pattern

Lion brand Coboo – DK, #3 lightweight (51% Cotton, 49% Rayon from Bamboo, 232 yards/212m per 3.5 oz/100g skein)

Estimated Yardage

Main Color – (MC) Red = 70 yards

Contrasting Color (CC1) Black = 30 yards

Contrasting Color 2 (CC2)  Yellow = 10 yards

Contrasting Color 3 (CC3), White  = 10 yards

Hook and other Materials

US size G  (4 mm) Crochet Hook

Button – 2 pieces (0.8cm)

Gauge – 14 sts over 8  rows = 10 cm/4” square made in dc

The stitch technique used for this easy crochet mug cozy pattern

Recently, I fell in love with the crossed double crochet stitches. And have since been playing with this beautiful stitch by adding or removing chain spaces.

Stitches Abbreviations

Chain/chains – ch/chs

Single Crochet – sc

Half double crochet – hdc

Double crochet – dc

Special Stitches used in the pattern for this easy crochet mug with a pocket

Crossed double crochet lace (Xdcl)

First row of xdcl = *Skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, crocheting over the dc just made into the 1st skipped st, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops, ch 1

Rep from * to the end

Subsequent rows of xdcl =

 *Skip the first leg of xdcl and next ch sp, dc in the second leg of xdcl, ch 1, crocheting over the dc just made into the first leg of xdcl, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch and yarn over (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops, ch 1

Finished Measurements

Cozy = 11.5’’ by 2.5’’

Santa hat = 2’’ tall 2’’ circumference 

Construction note

  1. This cozy is made in 3 sections. 
  2. The first section is the main cozy, the second section – the pocket, and the third is the spoon hat, made in rounds.

Section 1 – Main Mug Cozy Pattern

With MC, chain 74

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each ch across, turn.  72 dc

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdcl across to last st, dc in last st, turn. 2 dc, 24 xdcl

Row 3: Rep Row 2

Fasten off MC, join CC1

Row 4: Rep Row 2

Fasten off CC1, join MC

Rows 5 – 6: Rep Row 2

Row 7: Ch 2, *hdc in the first leg of xdcl, hdc in next ch sp, hdc in next leg of xdcl, rep from * to last st, hdc in last st, turn.

Do not fasten off

Edging

Crocheting down the short side, one side at a time.

With the right side facing you.

You can use only MC or join CC1 midway through.

Row 1:  Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st/ch sp across. Fasten off.

Join yarn on the opposite side, repeat Row 1

Fasten off. 

Section 2 – Pocket/belt for the Mug Cozy

With MC, chain 16

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each ch across, turn.  14 dc

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first st, xdcl across to last st, dc in last st, turn. 2 dc, 4 xdcl

Fasten off MC, join CC

Row 3: Rep Row 2

Fasten off CC, join MC

Rows 4: Rep Row 2

Row 5: Ch 2, *hdc in first leg of xdcl, hdc in next ch sp, hdc in next leg of xdcl, rep from * to last st, hdc in last st, turn. 14 hdc

Edging

Crocheting down the short side, one side at a time.

With the right side facing you.

You can use only CC2.

Round 1:  Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st/ch sp around; aim for ch 2 at each end. 

Leave a long tail of yarn for sewing

Fasten off.

To assemble your crochet mug cozy and pocket

Place the pocket over the right side of the mug cozy

With CC2, using mattress stitch, sew the pocket to the mug cozy, leaving the fourth side un-sewn.

Santa’s Hat

Round 1: With MC, in a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc into magic ring, place stitch marker and move with each round 6 sc

[if you are not familiar with a magic ring, you can ch 2, 6 sc into 1st chain]

Round 2: *2 sc in next st, sc in next, repeat from * to the end of the round, move stitch marker. 9 sc

Rounds 3 – 5: sc in each st. 9 sc

Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, repeat from * to the end of the round. 12 sc

Round 7: sc in each st. 12 sc

Fasten off MC

Join CC3

Round 8: sc in each st around 12 sc

Round 9: sc in each st around. 12 sc

Fasten off

  1. I like this set but it I don’t seem to find the third part of the pattern (the spoon hat). Is it listed somewhere else? I think it would be a nice addition to the set I am making for a gift.
