Getting by in winter can be difficult, especially with my newest. When going on school runs and pushing the pram this season, my fingers get too cold, and these crochet mittens have been a lifesaver.

Yarn – Hobbii Friends Extra Merino, Fine, 100% Wool, 50 g per 1.75 oz)
2 strands of the yarn were held together throughout.
Sample made in Lilac (color A) and Purple (Color B)

Hook and other Materials
4 mm Crochet Hook
Gauge 17 sts over 14 rounds = 4” made in hdc
Adjust hook size, if necessary, to obtain gauge.

Terms – US Terminology
Stitches used for the crochet mitten pattern
Chain/chains – ch/chs
Half double crochet – hdc
Double crochet – dc
Slip Stitch – sl st
Special Stitch for this easy crochet mitten
Popcorn stitch: 5 dc in indicated st. Remove your hook from the last st and insert it into the top of the first dc, from front to back. Pass the hook through the loop left from the 5th st, and sl st to complete the stitch.

How to crochet a pair of crochet mittens
Section 1 – Base for the crochet mittens
With Color A for all sizes
Round 1: In a magic ring, ch 1, 10 hdc, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 10 hdc
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 20 hdc
For the Toddler size, skip to Round 3 (4, 4, 5)
Round 3: Ch 1, *2 hdc, hdc in next st, rep from * around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 30 hdc
For the Child and Teen sizes, skip to Round 3 (4, 4, 5)
Round 4: Ch 1, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, rep from * around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 40 hdc.
For all sizes
Rounds 3 (4, 4, 5) – 11 (15, 17, 19): Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 20 (30, 30, 40) hdc
Check for fit – The mitts should be at the base of your thumb.
If not, add a few more rounds.
If too long, frog back until you get to the base of your thumb.
Split for the thumb
Round 12 (16, 18, 20): Ch 1, hdc in first st, ch 3 (4, 4, 6) skip next 3 (3, 3, 4) sts, hdc in remaining sts, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 17 (27, 27, 36) hdc
Try your mitts on to check if the space left for the thumb opening is a good fit.
If too tight, increase the chains and the skipped sts.
Round 13 (17, 19, 21): Ch 1, hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 chains, hdc in each of the remaining sts, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 21 (31, 31, 43) hdc
Rounds 14 (18, 20, 22) – 21 (23, 23, 25): Ch 1, hdc in each sts around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 21 (31, 31, 41) hdc
Fasten off A, join B
Section 2 – Cuff for the crochet mittens
With Color B for all sizes
Round 1: Hdc in each sts around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 21 (31, 31, 43) hdc
Round 2: Ch 2, *dc, popcorn, rep from * until the last st, dc in last st, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 11 (16, 16, 21) dc
10 (15, 15, 20) popcorn st
Round 3: Ch 2, dc around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 21 (31, 31, 41) dc
Round 4: Ch 2, *dc, popcorn, rep from * until the last st, dc in last st, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 11 (16, 16, 21) dc
10 (15, 15, 20) popcorn st
Round 5: Ch 2, dc around, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 21 (31, 31, 41) dc

Crochet mittens – Thumb
Join Color A with a sl st to the 2nd skipped stitch.
Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join 7 (9, 9, 11) hdc
Rounds 2 – 5 (7, 9, 11): Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join, 7 (9, 9, 11) hdc
Turn to the wrong side.
With both sts, sl st to close.
Fasten off.
