Today, I am celebrating my birthday with this easy crochet birthday cake. I thought to share with you all a virtual birthday cake. The truth is the fiber cake looks yummy and would love for you to make something similar to have your own slice of this cake.

Easy crochet birthday cake pattern for any yarn-loving person. Who else is joining me in celebrating with this fiber-rich cake? Aside from crocheting, I love baking abe decorating cakes. Since it’s my birthday, I decided to make myself a cake from yarn!

Who is ready to make some yummy crochet cakes? I sure know I would be making more!

I have always loved crochet flowers, I made a few some years ago. Crochet roses and 3D cushions and Heart shaped pillows were one of my favorite makes.

I love that you can customize this crochet cake pattern. The added flowers are made in different sizes likewise the cake. You could even add more tiers to your cake!

Materials for this easy crochet birthday cake pattern

Yarn – For this easy cake pattern, I used chunky yarn for the cake and then a DK for the flowers!

Cake – Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Chunky Knitting Wool/Yarn 100g

Color A = Biscuit

Estimated yardage – 360 yards

Flower

Hobbii Twister Summer, fine, #2 (55% Cotton, 45% Acrylic, 1093 yards/1000m per 250g Cake)

Note – 2 strands of Hobbii twister were held together every time you use either color B or C.

Color B = Pink

Color C = Green

Estimated yardage – 120 yards

HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • Cake – 6 mm hook
  • Flower – US size G (4 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Polyfibre

Gauge

Rounds 1 – 3 of the base = 3” Diameter using the pattern instruction for Rounds 1 – 3

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

Instructions for this crochet cake pattern

Medium cake

Round 1: In a magic ring, 12 hdc, join

Round 2: Crocheting in a spiral from here on – 2 hdc in each st around – 24 hdc

  • In 3rd loop from rounds 3 – 6
  • Place stitch marker and move it with every round.

Round 3: *2 hdc, hdc, rep from * to end– 36 hdc

Round 4: *2 hdc, hdc in next 2 sts, rep from * to end – 48 hdc

Round 5: *2 hdc, hdc in next 3 sts, rep from * to end – 60 hdc

Round 6: Hdc in each st around – 60 hdc

Body – Medium Cake

Round 7: In BLO, hdc in each st around – 60 hdc

Rounds 8   – 16: In both loops, hdc around, sl st in the next 2 sts to close height difference – 60 hdc

With a single strand of A or any DK and 4 mm hook

Row 1: Ch 125, dc in 5th ch from hook, *ch 2, skip next 2 chs, rep from* to end, turn. 41 dc, 40 ch sp

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a st), 3 dc in first ch sp, *ch 4, sc in next st, ch 4, 4 dc in next ch sp, rep from * until last 12 ch sps, fasten off A, join B. **Ch 2, skip next ch sp, sc in next st, ch 5, sc in same st, ch 2, skip next ch sp, sc in next st, rep from ** to end, turn.  6 ch-5 sps, 28 sc, 112 dc

Row 3: With B,ch 1, sc in first ch sp, *(5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) in ch 5 sp, skip next ch 2 sp, sc in next ch 2 sp, rep from * until last ch 5 sp, (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) in ch 5 sp, sl st to the next ch 2 sp.

To assemble the flower

  • Start from the ruffled end
  • Roll in a circular fashion and gradually expand the circle until you have completed the whole piece.

Medium-sized cake

Round 1: Ch 3, 5 dc in same st, *sc in next st, 6 dc in next st, rep from * to last st, sc in last st, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 30 sc, 30 petals

Fasten off

Optional – Work one round of ruffles on the upper edge of the cake.

Pick up the largest cake and join B

Round 1: Ch 3, 5 dc in same st, *sc in next st, 6 dc in next st, rep from * to last st, sc in last st, join with a sl st to the beginning ch. 42 sc, 42 petals

Fasten off

Repeat as with the medium size cake

Final assembling of your crochet birthday cake

Secure the medium-sized cake on the large one. Make sure to position it in the center of the large cake.

To secure the flowers

1. Place one big flower on top of the cake.

2. Place the second large flower on the side of the medium and the last 2 on the sides of the large cake.

  1. Smaller flowers – place two on each side of the cakes.
  2. Secure with yarn to the body of the cake.
