It’s time for a fun project: the crochet dress towel topper pattern. I love the idea of creating this one – it makes me giggle each time I use the towel.

Supplies needed for the crochet dress towel topper pattern

Yarn – Any #7-weight yarn will be perfect for this project.

I used Hobbii Ribbon, Chunky (#7, 100% Cotton, 250 g/8.8 oz,125 m 137 yds /250g Ball)

Estimated yardage

Green – 50 yards

Hook

  • 8 mm Crochet Hook

Other Materials

  • Smaller crochet hook – I used 2.5 mm to join the main towel holder to the towel.
  • Darning Needle (optional if the crochet hook can easily penetrate the towel)
  • Towel – Mine measures 28” by 20”

Gauge 

8 stitches, 5 rows to 10 cm/4″ before blocking.

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

  1. Please kindly read through the pattern before starting.
  2. Any # 7 weight yarn can be substituted for this project.
  3. You can use two strands of chunky yarn to replace ~7-weight yarn.

Crossed half double crochet (xhdc) – *skip next st, hdc in next st, crocheting over the hdc just made, work hdc into the skipped st, rep from * to the end.

How to make this simple crochet dress towel topper pattern.

Chain 44, join with a sl st to the first ch. 

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in first ch, *2 hdc in next ch, hdc in next ch, rep from * around. 66 hdc

Rounds 2 – 3: Ch 2, xhdc in each st around, join. 33 xhdc

Split for sleeve opening 

Round 4: Ch 2, skip the next 16 sts, xhdc in the next 16 sts, skip the next 16 sts, xhdc in each sts around, and join. 17 xhdc

Rounds 5 – 8: Ch 2, xhdc in each st around, join. 17 xhdc.

Adding the Towel to the lower end of the Towel Holder


Step 1: Fold the towel into two.

  • Use the smallest crochet hook available and the most convenient to crochet with.
  • Using the G crochet hook
  • Aim for the same number of stitches from the last round when crocheting on the towel. 
  • If punching the towel with the smallest available crochet hook is difficult, use a sewing needle or darning needle, sew evenly on the towel, and continue from step 3 below. 

Row 1: Ch 1, punch the towel with the hook, sc evenly across one side of the towel

Step 3: Attach the towel to the towel holder.

  • Switch to a bigger hook (8 mm)

– Crocheting into the stitches around the towel holder and the row of scs on the towel.

  • Count the number of stitches on the towel and the round made on the towel.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc evenly across both panels, join.

Step 4: To hide the joining for a beautiful look.

Round 1: Ch 1, hdc in each st around.

Round 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc), in same ch sp, *skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, rep from * until the end, join with a sl st to the beginning chain.

Fasten off.

Sew in all loose ends.

Neckline: Join yarn with a sl st to the foundation chain, crochet around the whole neckline, dc around, and join. 

Hanging options

  1. I prefer to use the armhole openings – Pass the spoon handle through the armholes. Using the spoon, you can hang the set (cooking spoon, towel holder). 
  2. Hang the towel holder on your oven handle.
